Vanessa Miller

The person behind the work

Vanessa Miller was born and raised in South Africa. She graduated with an Economics Degree from the University of Stellenbosch and a post graduate degree in teaching from UNISA. After nine eleven her husband, who was an international baseball scout for the Milwaukee Brewers had to move their family back to his home town, Huntsville Alabama. It was here that Vanessa started to paint while her twins went to Mothers morning out. She started out in portraiture, learning from Daniele E Greene in New York and Chris Saper at the Scottsdale Artist School. It was later, on a trip to California, that she discovered Plein Air Painting. And fell in love with painting in the fresh Air, surrounded by Gods creation. Vanessa says, it is the LIGHT that inspires her to paint. Whether it is the light creating a pattern on a still life or the early morning light of a sunrise. "It grabs my attention and inspires me" My motivation comes from wanting to be a better artist every day. I'm drawn to the Old Master works of Edgar Degas and Edgar Payne. Their transparent layers and colors is what keeps me curious. I want my work to show these transparent layers, with some evidence of line and lots of broken brushstrokes. Her work has been accepted into National Juried Shows; Which include, Oil painters of America (OPA), the American Impressionist Society of America (AIS) and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters of America(NOAPS). In 2020 she won "Best Outdoor Still Life " by the Plein Air Salon Competition. Her work has been published in Fine Art Connisseur , in Plein Air Magazine and in the magazine, At home Arkansas.
